El Chapo's former lieutenant who tried to help drug lord escape prison is convicted of US drug charges

Evil Dámaso López – who sparked a wave of gangland violence in his bloodthirsty bid to take over the Sinaloa cartel – yesterday plead guilty to smuggling cocaine into the US.

He now faces a potential life sentence in a high-security American jail.

Known as "El Licenciado" – or "the college graduate" – Lopez was arrested in Mexico City in May 2017 after a huge CIA manhunt tracked him down to a dingy apartment.

In July 2015 he reportedly helped cartel leader Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman break out of jail.

The plot involved cocaine baron escaping by riding a motorbike through a mile-long tunnel under his cell shower.

Guzman has been held in solitary confinement in New York since being extradited to the United States on January 19.

Last year Lopez's son – El Chapo's godson – handed himself over to US cops after a failed bid to take over the cartel himself.

Damaso Lopez Serrano bragged on social media about a life of luxury showing off pictures of beautiful women, weapons and exotic animals.

But it is believed that his dad fell out with Guzman’s children after "El Chapo" was arrested in 2016 which led to a split in the Sinaloa Cartel.

After Licenciado was arrested in Mexico City in May it was believed his son would take control in Culiacan, a city in Sinaloa state.

But the cartel ended up being lead by El Mayo – one of the criminal gang’s original founders.
