Driver cheats death as metal poles dislodged from van smash through window inches from his head

The poles flew through the window when the motorist was forced to brake suddenly on the M56 near Manchester.

Ceri Holmes posted on Twitter: "This is my husbands car in the accident, he said no one is hurt, but it’s carnage."

She added: "My husband is completely shook up. He has just scraped death."

The metal rods had been stored on a van behind and were hurled forward as a result of the impact.

Shocking photos show the poles spearing the Range Rover's dashboard – just centimetres away from the driver's seat.

Highways England reported a 'multi-vehicle' crash which led to a diesel spillage and resulted in the full closure of the westbound carriageway between junction six for Manchester Airport, the Hale Four Seasons roundabout, and junction seven, for the A556 Chester Road at Bowdon.
