Domino's pizza boss, 23, sacked for writing 'golliwog' on takeaway he gave to black driver – but calls it 'banter'

A DOMINO’S Pizza boss has been sacked for writing “golliwog” on a takeaway he gave to a black driver.

Sam Hemingway, 23, scrawled the racial slur on a box before handing it to colleague Nathaniel Ramsey.

NOTE VERY SLICE

He also wrote “Kunta Kinte” and “Toby” making references to the TV slave drama Roots – but insisted the offensive comments were just “banter”.

Mr Ramsey found the messages on his boxes on two separate occasions.

The delivery driver confronted Hemingway and asked Mold Magistrates’ Court heard.

Mr Ramsey complained to police and his supervisor was charged with racially aggravated harassment.

The two men worked at a Dominos branch at the Island Green Retail Park in Wrexham, North Wales.

This is behaviour that has gone beyond banter. Some would say it was very childish behaviour in the workplace

Hemingway admitted two charges of racially aggravated harassment over the slurs in February last year.

Ian Barnes, defending, said he lost his job as a supervisor over what had happened.

Mr Barnes said Hemingway and Mr Ramsey had been friends and had previously been to each other's birthday parties.

He said the pair had regularly enjoyed "banter" as part of their jobs working in the busy pizza takeaway.

He said: "This is a case of banter that's just got out of hand and crossed boundaries."
"He is embarrassed over what has happened."

Hemingway, from Wrexham, was fined £600 with and ordered to pay £100 compensation, £85 costs and a £30 surcharge.

Magistrates chair Andy Stubbs said: "This is behaviour that has gone beyond banter.

"Some would say it was very childish behaviour in the workplace".
