Dad shames council over SEVEN ’embarrassing’ spelling mistakes in letter fining him for taking child out of school

Daniel Moore, 31, received the penalty notice from Devon County Council – and it contained seven simple spelling blunders.

Howlers in the letter, sent on behalf of Devon’s Head of Education and Learning, included 'hte', 'guitly', 'notie', 'dtealied', 'issus' and 'cred'.

Daniel said: "At first I thought it was quite funny but when you place it into context that these people are responsible for the future of children's education it is concerning.”

The council boss told Daniel to "ensure you read this notice carefully" – so he did, spotting several elementary spelling errors.

Daniel circled the spelling mistakes in red pen and graded it a D-, saying that the Head of Education in Devon “needed to try harder".

He took his five-year-old son, Charlie, out of a school in Exmouth, Devon, for a five-day family break in Majorca.

Daniel was fined £60, which he is willing to pay, but added that the council letter was “sloppy”.

The disgruntled dad has since sent a response, asking if the penalty notice was genuine because it read like a “phishing scam".

He said: "I'll pay the £60 fine but I just wanted to make sure people could see how sloppy the letter was."

A Devon County Council spokesman said: "It's an embarrassing error and we have taken steps to ensure it won’t be repeated.

"We have been trialling a new IT printing system and a number of mistakes were unfortunately not picked up before this letter was dispatched.”
