Driveway war: Couple are banned from parking a car on the entrance road they built more than a decade ago after new neighbour says the vehicle is trapping his disabled wife inside

  • Tony Pawson has been ordered by Hull City Council to stop using the entrance road outside his property where he parks his car
  • Darren Denholm said his wife had not been able to leave their bungalow for 10 months
  • He complained to the council that the pathway leading to their home was blocked by his neighbour’s car on the entrance road

A couple have been banned from using their driveway by the council following a bitter dispute with their new neighbours.

Tony and Elaine Pawson, of east Hull, say they were ordered by Hull City Council to stop using the driveway they built 13 years ago after their neighbours complained their car was trapping them inside.

The Pawsons live next door to Darren Denholm, 51, and his partner, Tina Wood, 62, who had a stroke, uses a wheelchair and suffers from epilepsy.

Mr Denholm said his partner had not been able to leave their bungalow for 10 months as the pathway leading to their home was blocked by his neighbour’s car on the entrance road.

Tony Pawson now has to park his car on a shared driveway located directly outside his home

Mr Pawson now has to park his car on a shared driveway directly outside of his home instead of the entrance road.

They use of their own front doors, although in front of Mr Denholm’s is a large, green bush, with a small path leading from his door to the pathway.

Mr Denholm, who moved into the bungalow in November 2017, says because of the ‘huge’ communal bush outside the property his partner cannot use the pathway next to the driveaway.

He said: ‘We had a surveyor and occupational health come round in January to have a look at the bush and he was going to flatten it all and make it concrete because the pathway isn’t big enough for my partner’s wheelchair and the steps are all uneven.

‘I called back in May and the surveyor had gone on sick and told the council I refused the work.

‘Tina hasn’t been out the house since we moved here because we can’t get her out either side.

‘She is imprisoned in her own home. She has been in the back garden once but that is it. He is breaking his tenancy as it is a communal area and two council officers have told him not to park there.’

He said he is also unable to wheel his partner from the back garden because of Mr and Mrs Pawson’s car which takes up too much space.

He added: ‘I don’t want to fall out with them about it. There might not even be an issue if the bush was taken down but I’ve also asked the neighbours to move their cars out of the way because if the front of the bungalow was on fire then we wouldn’t be able to get out.’

But Mrs Pawson, 56,  who has epilepsy and fibromyalgia, said she needs the car close to the property as she cannot walk too far.

Darren Denholm said his partner cannot leave her home as a result of his neighbour’s car being left on the driveway

Mrs Pawson said: ‘They said for us to do it ourselves so we did and we’ve never had an issue. When the neighbour moved in last year he complained saying he didn’t want the car in the driveway and said he couldn’t open his curtains as he didn’t like seeing it.’

She said her and her husband even got rid of their caravan to make the situation better.

‘We got rid of it so he had more room and it still wasn’t enough.

‘He wants us to get the car out of the drive.’

‘A woman came from the council about six weeks ago and said we are cutting across the footpath and when I told her we wrote a letter asking for planning permission she said they’d lost that ages ago. They’ve been hundreds of times and have never been bothered about it.

‘We even replaced some of the path because the slabs had shrunk. We went to Occupational Health and they couldn’t see a problem with it. They just want us to park anywhere that isn’t the front.’

Mr Denholm said it is because of the bush that the issue of the driveway started to become a problem

Hull City Council described the ongoing issue between the neighbours as ‘complex’ and said they are trying to help as best they can.

A spokeswoman for the council, said: ‘This is a complex issue which has been ongoing for some time, and we are working with both parties involved to resolve their issues and reach an agreeable solution that is beneficial for all.’

The two couples share a communal back garden with another bungalow, which is located at the side of Mr and Mrs Pawson’s property.
