A costumed Father Christmas has died after collapsing at a kindergarten party in Russia, it has emerged.

The 67-year-old fell ill while he was attending a traditional festive event in the  Siberian city of Kemerovo.

He is said to have been transferred to an ambulance but died on his way to hospital.

A source told the Interfax agency that the unnamed man had ‘complained of chest pain’ in the run-up to his collapse.

A medical source also told sibdepo.ru: ‘The man felt ill in the kindergarten, he was taken in an ambulance but died on the way to the hospital.’

Russian versions of Santa Claus are known as Ded Moroz, or Father Frost, according to the Moscow Times.

In a Soviet-era tradition, they host children’s parties over the New Year period along with a fairy tale snow maiden character known as Snegurochka.

Unlike Father Christmas, Ded Moroz delivers gifts on New Year’s Eve rather than on Christmas Eve.
