A clerk in Texas is facing criminal charges after selling alcohol to a teen driver involved in a wreck that killed two 16-year-old girls, authorities said.
Gumaro Munoz Campos, 29, of Humble, was arrested Sunday on one count of sale of an alcoholic beverage to a minor, a misdemeanor punishable by a $4,000 fine and up to one year in jail, according to Chris Porter, a spokesman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
“We identified Mr. Campos as the employee on duty the night the alleged sale was made,” Porter said.
Campos was arrested outside a Valero convenience store in Humble, north of Houston, after a 17-year-old driver, Jaggar Clayton Smith, identified him as the clerk who sold him fortified wine before police say Smith lost control of his Nissan Altima on July 25 with two 16-year-old girls in the car.
Smith’s Altima slammed into several trees and the impact was so fierce that it split the car in half, killing Chloe Robison at the scene. Salma Gomez, who was sitting in the front seat, later died at a hospital, KPRC reports.
Smith, a student at Kingwood High School, suffered minor injuries. All three teens were wearing seatbelts, authorities said.
“It’s just very tragic and we see this way, way too often, especially seeing that alcohol was a factor,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told the station.
A press conference on Campos’ arrest was scheduled for Monday afternoon at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office in Houston.
Robison and Gomez were getting ready to start their junior year at Atascocita High School.
Smith, meanwhile, now faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted on two counts of intoxication manslaughter, according to the Houston Chronicle.
