Chinese intelligence officers indicted for trying to steal US technology

The Department of Justice is going after Chinese intelligence officers who have been attempting to steal US technology for years, according to a newly unsealed indictment.

Prosecutors with the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office on Thursday have charged two Chinese nationals who they say work with the country’s Ministry of State Security in Tiannjin.

The two officers — including Zhu “Godkiller” Hua and Zhang “Baobeilong” Jianguo — are members of a hacking group known as Advanced Persistent Threat 10, or APT10 Group, according to the indictment.

Since 2006, members of the APT10 Group have been trying to hack the computer networks of commercial and defense technology companies — and US government agencies — to steal their technology, prosecutors said.

They accessed computers in at 12 least states, including New York, Texas, California, Connecticut, Virginia and Wisconsin, and stole “hundreds of gigabytes of sensitive data,” prosecutors said.

Affected industries include aviation, space and satellite technologies, as well as oil and gas exploration, pharmaceuticals and maritime technologies.

The men remain at large. They have been charged with wire fraud, conspiracy and identity theft.
