The cancer-stricken “Broadway Bandit” looked frail as he appeared in Manhattan federal court Friday for a hearing related to yet another bank-robbery charge.
“Yes, your honor,” Jamie Frierson, 49, replied in a soft voice when Magistrate Judge Stewart Aaron asked the convicted bank robber if he understood his rights.
Frierson, wearing a neon-green t-shirt and dark pants, could hardly walk out of the courtroom after the hearing and leaned heavily on a cane for support — a sharp contrast from the tough-guy pose he cut during his string of robberies along the Great White Way.
“I HAVE A GUN. GIVE ME MONEY,” he wrote in a note to one terrified bank teller working at an HSBC Bank branch on Union Square in August 2017 — his first caper in a string of seven bank robberies along Broadway.
Frierson was arrested later that month and sat in jail while awaiting trial. At his sentencing on April 29, District Judge Annalisa Torres, citing Frierson’s Stage 4 colon-cancer diagnosis, let the sickly stick-up artist walk with time served.
In the days to follow, Frierson allegedly held up two Apple Bank branches in The Bronx. He was arrested May 14 and has since been kept in a hospital.
At his presentment on one of the latest charges, Frierson was appointed a public defender, Christopher Flood of the Federal Defenders of New York, who declined to comment following the hearing.
