Police are appealing for help in tracing Mr Cowley and warned people not to approach him.

Yesterday one neighbour said she would frequently bump into John Cowley while they were out walking their dogs.

She added: ‘He was always great with me. He just seemed a nice, friendly chap. He lives at the property with his wife Alison, and their teenage daughter.

‘They just seemed like a normal, happy couple. He loves fishing and sometimes if he caught something he would drop it off with me.’

She said she first became aware of the incident when she saw smoke rising from the direction of the property where John Cowley lived.

‘I assumed he was burning materials,’ she said. Everybody’s in shock over what’s happened.’

Detective Supt Claire McEnery, of Lancashire Police, said: ‘We are continuing to work hard to trace John Cowley and to speak to him about what are very serious offences.

‘We believe that this was a targeted attack and while we would ask that if anyone sees John they do not approach him but report sightings to the police we do not believe that there is any significant on-going risk to the wider public.

‘I would urge anyone who has seen him, or a man matching his description, to contact police immediately.

‘I would also urge John himself to hand himself in if he sees this appeal.’
