Brits last chance for sunshine this weekend before cold snap arrives

Britain’s balmy autumn weather will continue over the weekend but dig out the thermals because a cold snap is on its way.

Temperatures could reach 18F (64F) in the south east today (Saturday), well above average for the time of the year.

The unseasonably mild conditions will be enjoyed as far north as Edinburgh, where highs of 15C (59F) are expected.

Sunday will see similar conditions, with patches of rain, but as we enter next week a noticeable change is coming.

Forecasters say widespread nighttime frosts will become the norm as October draws to a close.

And snow is likely to fall in the Scottish Highlands.

But before then we can all enjoy a fine and mainly dry weekend.

The south, central England and parts of Wales will have the best of the weather, with clear skies and sunshine. The north will see more cloud and rain.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Temperatures in the southeast are expected to be between 16C and 18C, which is above average for October.”

Next week the picture becomes more unsettled, with wet and windy conditions across many parts and Scotland likely to have heavy rain.

“It will be noticeably colder across the whole of the UK on Monday,” the Met Office said.

The thermometer will continue to drop to around 11-12C later next week and temperatures could fall even further as we enter November.

Three-day UK weather forecast

Tonight (Saturday night) : It will be dry with clear spells for many southern and eastern parts. However, there will be more cloud in the north and west with patchy light rain for Northern Ireland, western Scotland and parts of north-west England. Through the night, mist and fog will develop for most of England and Wales.

Tomorrow (Sunday) : Tomorrow is expected to start foggy for much of England and Wales, although it will become dry with sunny spells later. There will be rain for northern and north-western areas in the morning, some of which will be heavy. It will become bright in the afternoon with a few showers for north-west Scotland.

UK Outlook (Monday and Tuesday) : On Monday, there will be sunny spells for England and Wales after a rather chilly start. It will be cloudier in the north with outbreaks of rain and brisk winds for northern Scotland. Tuesday will be dry with sunny spells for most and there will be rain in northern Scotland.
