THE 2019 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine has been jointly awarded to three scientists, including a British professor.

Sir Peter Ratcliffe is among the trio honoured for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.

The Nobel Committee in Sweden said they would share equally the £736,000 award.

It added: “The seminal discoveries by this year’s Nobel Laureates revealed the mechanism for one of life’s most essential adaptive processes.”

Sir Peter, 65, head of the hypoxia biology laboratory at Oxford, said: “I’m honoured and delighted. It’s a tribute to the lab.”

The other two are US professors William Kaelin Jr of Harvard Medical School and Gregg L Semenza of Johns Hopkins University.
