Britain’s 10 best chippies will be handing out FREE food TODAY – as they battle to be crowned Fish and Chip Shop of the Year in 2020 final at end of month

  • 10 finalists will compete for title of the ‘Fish and Chip Shop of the Year’ and are offering free food to celebrate

Fish and chips is one of the UK’s most traditional dishes with just under half of Britons tucking into the takeaway at least every other week. 

The dish is beloved in households, with the criteria for the ‘best’ fish and chips a cause of nation-wide debate.

But the decision has been made that much easier as the top 10 fish and chip shops in the UK have been revealed – and are offering customers a free taster today.

The 10 finalists will now compete for the title of the ‘Fish and Chip Shop of the Year’.

To celebrate their nominations, all 10 are dishing out free fish suppers to their first 20 customers today. 

Industry body Seafish will announce the winner at the 32nd anniversary ceremony of The National Fish & Chip Awards in London on January 23.

Seafish Chief Executive Marcus Coleman said: ‘With just under one week to go, we’re eagerly awaiting to find out who will be crowned the best fish and chip shop in the UK for 2020. 

‘We love celebrating great fish and chips and today we want to celebrate the consumers who support the industry by buying their fish supper every week. 

‘Be sure to check if your local shop has made the cut.

‘Being shortlisted as a finalist for the flagship award is a phenomenal achievement and we hope people will head along on Friday to cheer on their local shop and enjoy some free fish and chips.

‘Everyone in the final truly deserves their spot and we wish them all the best of luck next week.’

The ten finalists are: Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire; Dolphin Takeaway in Dungannon, County Tyrone; Fish & Chips @ Weston Grove in Upton, Chester, Cheshire; Hiks in Swansea, West Glamorgan; Hooked@31 in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire; Rockfish in Brixham, Devon; Seafare in Guildford, Surrey; Shap Chippy in Shap, Penrith, Cumbria; The Cod’s Scallops in Wollaton, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and The Golden Carp in Redditch, Worcestershire.
