Boy Scout dies after drunk driver plows into group: police

One of the Long Island boy scouts struck by a drunken Mercedes Benz driver Sunday afternoon has died, authorities said Monday.

Five members of Troop 161 ranging in age from 12 to 16 were walking on the shoulder of David Terry Road in Manorville shortly before 2 p.m. when they were hit head-on by a 2016 Mercedes Benz driven by 59-year-old Thomas Murphy, police said.

One of the struck boys, Andrew McMorris, 12, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he later died, Suffolk County police said Monday.

The four other Troop 161’s members were injured in the crash: Thomas Lane, 15, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, while his brother, 16-year-old Denis, and two other boys — Kaden Lynch and Matthew Yakaboski, both 15 — were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

“As part of the Suffolk County Council, our Scouting family is going through a terribly painful time. We are sad to confirm the death of one of our youth members following a vehicle-related incident while hiking,” Ryan DiBernardo, scout executive and CEO of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, wrote Monday in a Facebook post.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family, and we will support them in any way that we can. Our thoughts remain with the Scouts still recovering from this incident.”

Murphy was charged with driving while intoxicated and is due to be arraigned Monday.
