Bodies of man, woman and teenage girl are found in Northern Ireland flat as police probe ‘double murder suicide’

  • Detectives are investigating after the bodies were found in County Down today
  • All three people are understood to have been known to each other, police said
  • The area in Newry has been cordoned off to be preserved for forensic investigators  

The bodies of a man, woman and teenage girl have been found in a Northern Ireland flat, with one line of police inquiry being a possible double-murder suicide.

Detectives are investigating after the bodies were found in Newry, County Down, at around 11am on Thursday morning.

All three people are understood to have been known each other and local police have since cordoned off the area.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy said: ‘The circumstances of the deaths will now be subject to investigation and post-mortem examinations will take place in due course.

‘At this stage it would not be appropriate to elaborate further on the circumstances as our inquiries are at an extremely early stage.’

Officers are at the scene at Glin Ree Court, and police tape marked the area preserved for forensic investigation in front of some whitewashed flats.

Newry is close to Northern Ireland’s border with the Irish Republic.

SDLP politician Justin McNulty said: ‘Terrible news breaking.

‘This community is in shock and a dark cloud hangs over Newry this afternoon.

‘My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased.’
