A possible clue in the mysterious disappearance of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts has turned up — prompting searchers to scour ditches near a pig farm, according to a report.
The potential clue — a red shirt — was found Thursday by a person mowing a lawn near the Lincoln Wildfire Reserve in Brooklyn, Iowa, Fox News reported.
Tibbetts, 20, worked at a daycare center and an employee there told the network that workers wear red shirts.
It wasn’t immediately clear whose shirt it was.
Search teams looked through ditches about a mile away from the reserve, located near a pig farm that investigators also recently searched.
Farmer Wayne Cheney said he was questioned for two hours by officials and insisted he had “nothing to hide.” He has twice pleaded guilty to unrelated stalking charges, in 2009 and 2014.
Tibbetts, a student at the University of Iowa, went missing July 18 after going out for a jog around 7:30 p.m. She was last seen wearing shorts, a pink sports top and sneakers, police said.
She sent her boyfriend, Dalton Jack, a Snapchat message at 10 p.m. — but the case has flummoxed investigators, who have struggled to find any meaningful clues related to her disappearance.
A $172,000 reward has been offered for her safe return.
“We believe Mollie is still alive,” her mom, Laura Calderwood, said at a press conference Thursday.
