Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey’s house knocked from top spot

Historic £4.5million mansion with tennis courts and its own lake is set to become Wales’ most expensive home (even eclipsing the £3.1million Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey paid for his luxury house last year)

  • The 10 bedroom Great Campston Manor boasts a lake, tennis court and cottage in its 276 acres
  • King Charles II visited the manison, near Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, in 1645
  • The last native Prince of Wales, Owain Glyndwr, was defeated in battle nearby
  • Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey’s paid £3.1 million for his luxury Cardiff pad last year

A country mansion – steeped in history – is set to become the most expensive ever sold in Wales after going on the market for £4.5 million.

The asking price is significantly more than the highest sum paid for a Welsh property last year.

Football star Aaron Ramsey, Wales and Arsenal midfielder, paid out £3.1 million for his Cardiff pad in 2017.

Meanwhile the former home of TV pundit Craig Bellamy also recently sold for a cool £2,950,000.

But a stunning manor house fit for a king has now become the most expensive home on the market in Wales.

The 10 bedroom mansion boasts its own lake, tennis court and cottage in the grounds – offering more historic luxury than WAG bling.

King Charles II visited the Great Campston Manor, near Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, in 1645.

It is also believed to be where the last native Prince of Wales – Owain Glyndwr – was defeated in the battle of Campston Hill in 1404.

Born in 1359 into a powerful family of the Anglo-Welsh nobility, he is now a pivotal figure in Wales, with statues, monuments and street names commemorating him.

These stunning pictures show the extensive grounds and the complete luxury the manor affords its owners on the edge of the Brecon Beacons.

Who was the last Welsh Prince of Wales, Owain Glyndwr, who was defeated in the battle of Campston Hill in 1404?

Owain Glyndwr was born in 1359 to a powerful family of the Anglo-Welsh nobility.

He was the last native Welsh person to hold the title Prince of Wales.

On September 16, 1400, Glyndŵr instigated the Welsh Revolt against the rule of Henry IV of England.

A group of Owain’s supporters proclaimed him Prince of Wales at Glyndyfrdwy. Although initially successful, the uprising was eventually put down.

After the final battles of the revolt in 1412, little is known of Owain Glyndwr.

In his play, Henry IV, Shakespeare portrays Owain Glyndwr as a wild, exotic, magical and spiritual man, playing up the romantic ‘Celtic’ traits.

The nationalist movement has always held Owain Glyndwr in high regard, but he is now a figure of mass culture in Wales, with statues and monuments alongside pub and street names commemorating him.

If the property is sold for the asking price it would still be significantly cheaper than Britain’s most expensive properties ever sold.

A property in Cowley Street, Westminster, London, sold for a staggering £36 million.

That’s a mere £1million more expensive than the second most expensive in nearby Carlton House Terrace, St. James’s, London.
