A referee hands out a red card to Leonel Ovejero after he was caught urinating on the pitch during a third division soccer game in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old, who plays for Argentino de Merlo, has not addressed the incident

Leonel Ovejero was ejected from Tuesday night’s Argentino de Merlo-Sacachipas third division match for urinating on the field while a player from the opposing team was being checked for an injury. Verdejo’s actions left his club Argentino de Merlo shorthanded. The game ended in a scoreless tie

Play had stopped with about 11 minutes remaining when the TyC Sports broadcast team, fans and players on the field were wondering as to why the referee had just issued a red card.

The shocked Ovejero was shown on television placing his hands over his head and covering his face in disgust before the network’s on-field reporter revealed the reason for the sudden ejection.

‘He dropped his pants and urinated there on the pitch,’ she said.

When questioned that it simply was not true, the reporter quips, ‘I swear, the fourth man (official) is saying it.’

The 21-year-old was loaned by Argentine top division club Banfield until December

Argentina national Joaquín Pucheta was also ejected for urinating behind a billboard during match in Ecuador in April 2021. He was suspended for six games

The incident had TyC Sports announcers scratching their heads as Ovejero walked off the field and left his team a player short in a match that ended in a scoreless tie.

‘The guy can’t believe,’ one of the commentators said. ‘He couldn’t hold it?’

Argentino de Merlo and Primera B league officials had not addressed the incident as of Wednesday afternoon.

The club acquired Ovejero, a forward, on transfer from top division club Banfield until December and has picked up two losses and two ties through the first four games of the season.

It was his first red card with his new club.

Ovejero is not the first soccer player to urinate on the field in the middle of a game.

Argentine goalkeeper Joaquín Pucheta had the shameful honor of doing so in the middle of a match in Ecuador in April 2021.

He stepped behind billboard screen to urinate and was suspended for six matches for ‘committing obscene acts.’
