The Wire star Dominic West has hit back at Donald Trump after the president slammed Rep. Elijah Cummings as ‘a brutal bully’ at the weekend, saying that the congressman’s Baltimore district is a ‘rat and rodent infested mess.’

West, who starred as Detective Jimmy McNulty in all five seasons of The Wire, added his voice to the growing backlash against Trump’s tweets.

The English actor has described the U.S. president as a ‘lonely hysterical neurotic’ who has no understanding of Baltimore’s ‘vibrant’ community.

Who was Fred West?

Fred West was an English serial killer who committed at least 12 murders between 1967 and 1987 in Gloucestershire.

West asphyxiated himself in his cell after being jointly charged for nine murders alongside his wife, Rosemary West, and he for a further three murders.

One of the couple’s victims, Lucy Partington, was the cousin of novelist Martin Amis.

Amis wrote about his cousin’s murder in his memoir, ‘Experience’.

‘What would a lonely hysterical neurotic who uses hand cleanser all day understand about a vibrant community like Baltimore?’ He told The Guardian.

He went on to draw a comparison between Trump and English serial killer Fred West.

‘Martin Amis said of Fred West the serial killer that he was a “colossus of mendacity”. It’s an apt description of Trump.’

He added to Democratic congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s calls to ‘impeach the motherf*****’.

West is not the only star of the critically acclaimed, Baltimore-based crime drama The Wire who has spoken out about Trump’s latest Twitter controversy.

The show’s creator, who is a resident of Baltimore, said on Saturday: ‘If this empty-suit, race-hating fraud had to actually visit West Baltimore for five minutes and meet any of the American citizens who endure there, he’d wet himself.’

After Trump’s tweets sparked outrage online, a Twitter campaign with the hashtag #WEAREBALTIMORE went viral.

Simon tweeted a photograph of himself holding a guitar while sitting in front of his Baltimore home.

‘#WEAREBALTIMORE and there’s a block party today on my southside street,’ Simon tweeted.

‘This is a city of good Americans who deserve more than a grifting, hollow and self-absorbed failure of a man as their president.

‘@realDonaldTrump is a permanent stain on our land.’

The president received backlash for tweets at the weekend in which he launched a scathing attack on Democrat Congressman Elijah Cummings and Maryland’s seventh congressional district.

‘Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA,’ Trump wrote.

‘As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming [sic] District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place,’ the president continued.

He added: ‘Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States.

‘No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!’

Cummings fired back in his own tweets soon after: ‘Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors.’

It comes a week after Cummings exploded at Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan over conditions in facilities used to detain migrants and house unaccompanied migrant children at the southern border.

‘What does that mean, when a child is sitting in their own feces, can’t take a shower!’ Cummings shouted at McAleenan in the July 18 hearing. ‘Come on man, what’s that about?’

Cummings’ remarks were highlighted in a segment on Fox and Friends on Saturday morning, which Trump possibly watched from the White House.

In the segment, Kimberly Klacik, a Republican strategist from Baltimore, spoke about appalling conditions that residents in parts of the city face.

‘There is a crisis at the border, but there is also a crisis in Baltimore,’ Klacik said. ‘Congressman Cummings represents the most dangerous district in America.’

‘There’s abandoned row homes filled with trash, homeless addicts, empty needles that they have used, and it’s really right next door so it’s attracting cockroaches, rodents, you name it,’ said Klacik.

Democrats reacted with fury at Trump’s remarks, calling them ‘racist’ and unpatriotic.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led the charge, saying in a statement, ‘We all reject racist attacks against [Cummings] and support his steadfast leadership.’

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a member of the House Democrat ‘squad,’ tweeted at Trump that that Cummings is ‘centered in American values that you will *never* understand. He is a fighter for the people & a leader you will never be.’
