A keen gardener has turned his ordinary hedge into the stuff of legends after sculpting it into the shape of a dragon.

The 35-foot long privet outside Kris ‘Sting’ Wray’s home in Moortown, Leeds, has become a tourist attraction with passers-by stopping to take selfies in front of it.

Entertainer Sting, 60, who works as a children’s story teller, has always been a fan of myths and legends and decided he wanted to create something spectacular outside his semi-detached house.

The entertainer used an electric hedge trimmer and a pair of old fashioned shears to shape the dragon. He said he’ll teach his newborn grandson to trim the hedge so the artwork can survive into the next generation

He hit on the idea of a dragon and spent hours lovingly pruning it into shape using an electric hedge trimmer and a pair of old fashioned shears.

Sting – who never uses his real name of Kris – said: ‘I’ve always liked legends and historical tales, which is why I became a professional storyteller.

‘The idea came because I already had some gargoyles around my home and I thought a dragon would go alongside them very well.

‘I spent a long time working on it, I’d do a little bit and then walk over to the other side of the road so that I could see it taking shape and I was quite pleased with it.

‘But I must admit I’ve been quite surprised by the amount of attention it’s received.

‘People stop to take photographs and selfies in front of it and it’s put the street on the map a little bit.

The father-of-three said the unique decoration has become quite the attraction in the local area and people often stop to take photographs and selfies with his creation

‘I didn’t follow a picture or a pattern it just came out of my imagination and if I say so myself I think it looks quite good.’

Sting started life as a fitter before trying his hand at acting and then as an artist working on sets for shows such as Emmerdale.

The father of three says he will teach his month-old grandson Gabriel how to trim his unique hedge so that the artwork survives into the next generation.
