9 people shot, 2 fatally, at Chicago's Washington Park after 'personal altercation'

At least nine people were shot, two of them fatally, Tuesday evening in Chicago's Washington Park, according to police.

Officers responded to reports of multiple shots fired at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, the Chicago Police Department said in a statement. Investigators determined the shooting was the result of "some type of personal altercation between two groups," Deputy Chief Fred Melean said at a Tuesday news conference.

"Another tragic incident," he said.

No one is in custody following the shooting, the Chicago Police Department said in a statement Wednesday morning.

Police initially said seven people were shot, one of them fatally, but later updated that two more victims had taken themselves to a hospital and one additional person died.

A 43-year-old man was shot in the back of the head and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Chicago police said. A 20-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was hospitalized in critical condition, according to the statement. He later died from his injuries.

Others who were injured included a 30-year-old man, a 39-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man, and a 19-year-old man. Those victims were hospitalized in good condition, police said.

The two victims who took themselves to the hospital were a 33-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man. Both were grazed by bullets, police said.

Police believe all the victims were among the two groups that were fighting and were not bystanders, Melean said.

Melean asked witnesses to contact an anonymous police tip line, adding that a $15,000 reward is available for information leading to arrests.
