12-year-old boy arrested for fatally stabbing teen brother

A 12-year-old boy in Minnesota was arrested for fatally stabbing his 16-year-old brother with a kitchen knife, police said.

The teen, who was not immediately identified, was found at an apartment in Minnetonka late Saturday with a life-threatening stab wound to his chest. He was then rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators believe the teen’s 12-year-old brother used a kitchen knife in the stabbing, which took place after “some sort of altercation” between them, Police Chief Scott Boerboom told reporters Sunday, KARE reports.

“It’s a tragic situation,” Boerboom said. “This family was torn apart. We are a strong community and we will be with the family throughout this tragedy to support [them] and to be there.”

The 12-year-old boy was not injured during the incident but was taken to a hospital for observation before being released to his family. He was then arrested late Sunday and is awaiting possible charges at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office will review the case and make a final determination on charges, police said.

The Hennepin County medical examiner will release the name of the teen, authorities said.
