You'll be amazed how long Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek spent on costume fittings

If you think the trick to becoming Freddie Mercury is simply throwing on some outlandish gear and working on a strut, you’re sadly mistaken.

In a featurette to promote Bohemian Rhapsody called ‘Becoming Freddie’, Rami Malek reveals that he spent more than two days over the course of the production simply trying on costumes to become the legendary frontman of rock band Queen.

“We had about 50 hours of costume fittings, with heels that were four-inch platforms, the tightest-fitting satin pants, an entire Lycra outfit,” he says.

“When you dress as Freddie, does it makes every day feel like it’s going to be a good time.”

Malek also worked incredibly hard to capture the way Freddie moved. After working with some top choreographers, he soon realised they were not going to be able to help him.

“You don’t want to mimic Freddie, you want to be able to understand why he did what he did,” the Mr Robot star said, adding: “I needed a movement coach.”

Polly Bennett came on board as Malek’s movement coach and spent a lot of time with him trying to work out “little mannerism tricks… every eye look, every turn, every flick of the microphone”.

Malek has promised that the biopic will not shy away from addressing Freddie’s sexuality, after complaints about the trailer.

“I don’t think the film shies away from his sexuality or his all-consuming disease, which is obviously AIDS,” he explained.

“I don’t know how you could avoid any of that, or if anyone would ever want to. It’s a bit absurd that anyone’s judging this from a minute trailer.”

Bohemian Rhapsody is out on October 24 in the UK and November 2 in the US. Book tickets for selected locations here.
