Will Smith admits struggle with son Trey who felt 'betrayed and abandoned' after he fell in love with Jada Pinkett Smith and divorced his mum

Aladdin star Will, 50, is now able to get along much better with his grown-up boy, currently aged 26, but their situation hasn’t always been harmonious.

Sharing a video of himself talking about his relationship with his adult offspring on Instagram, Men in Black legend Will wrote: “It has not always been like this between Trey & I. We STRUGGLED FOR YEARS after my divorce from his mother.

“He felt betrayed & abandoned. It is a wild blessing to recover & restore a loving relationship with my beautiful son @treysmith0011.”

In the clip, he added: “I’m in Abu Dhabi at the F1. I brought my son Trey. We’ve been hanging and I usually take my kids separately on stuff just so they have their individual daddy time.

“So we’ve been doing this, me and him, we’ve been hanging at the F1 and he just hit me with, he said, ‘You know what, dad, I just realised, you’re not just my dad.’

“And he paused, and he said, ‘I’m pretty sure you’re my best friend.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, man. Probably, probably.’”

In response, Trey replied: “Awwwww shucks, you too big guy.”

Hollywood star Will married Trey’s mother Sheree in 1992 and their son Willard Carroll ‘Trey’ Smith III was born in November that year.

The couple divorced in 1995, however, and Will went on to marry actress Jada Pinkett Smith, 47.

Will and Jada have two children together named Jaden and Willow.
