Will Serena Williams be Godmother to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Baby?

The royal family is all about tradition — especially when it comes to royal babies. And, like all newborn royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby will likely be baptized shortly after his or her spring arrival. According to royal family traditions, most royal babies are baptized in the family’s private chapel at St. James’s Palace in London and, at the time of baptism, godparents are named. Who will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby’s godmother be? Some speculate their tennis pro friend, Serena Williams is a top contender.

In the royal family, siblings are often off-limits for godparents — which is why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle likely won’t honor Prince William and Kate Middleton with the role. Instead, royals select their closest, most trusted friends — and, judging by Meghan Markle and Serena Williams’s relationship, the tennis star is at the top of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s list.

Will Serena Williams be Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby’s godmother?

As one of Meghan Markle’s oldest, most trusted friends, Serena Williams could very well be Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby’s godmother. The tennis pro and duchess have been friends or over four years and Meghan Markle considers Serena her closest friend and confidente. Serena Williams is also a mother herself, so she likely offers Meghan Markle pregnancy advice and even parenting advice.

If Serena Williams is Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby’s godmother, she won’t be the only one. Royals typically select a few godparents for their children, which means that in addition to Serena Williams, one or two of Meghan Markle’s other best friends could receive the title. Here are our guesses for top contenders.

Princess Eugenie

In addition to Serena Williams, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could ask Princess Eugenie to be godmother to their first-born baby. According to several reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very close to Prince Harry’s cousin (as well as her husband). They even traveled together and, back when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were dating, went to Toronto to visit. As someone close to both the royal-to-be’s (as Prince Harry calls it) mother and father, she’s definitely a top contender.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra is another potential godmother. She and Meghan Markle met a few years ago and instantly clicked. Since they, they have supported each other’s acting careers, relationships, and marriages. Although Meghan Markle was absent and Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding earlier this month, the two likely remain close and Priyanka could be the future godmother to a prince or princess.

Jessica Mulroney

Another one of Meghan Markle’s close friends, Jessica Mulroney is also in the running. The mother of three and Toronto-based stylist has a very close relationship with the Duchess of Sussex (her kids were even in the royal wedding!). So, it wouldn’t surprise us if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle name her godmother to their new baby.

Benita Litt

Meghan Markle is likely considering her best friend, Benita Litt for godmother. The Duchess of Sussex is godmother to Benita’s daughters, Remi and Rylan and has remained ultra-close with her family. As it turns out, the duchess even spent Christmas 2016 with them, since she couldn’t spend it with her then-boyfriend, Prince Harry.
