Good news for fans of ITV’s compelling crime thriller Unforgotten – writer and creator Chris Lang is very hopeful that the cast and crew can return for another outing.
The show concluded tonight with Alex Jennings’ Doctor Tim Finch revealing himself to be a prolific serial killer responsible for Hayley’s sexually motivated murder.
Many viewers commended The Crown star’s “stunning” performance, while others demanded Nicola Walker win a BAFTA for her portrayal of Cassie’s dramatic and pained unraveling.
But what we were are all dying to hear next is will historical crime fighters DCI Cassie and DS Sunny live on to solve another murder? Especially as Nicola Walker’s Cassie agrees she needs to take a break from her successful sleuthing.
As the show is written entirely by creator Lang – taking on all of the creative responsibilities as a showrunner would in the US – and has the same director Andy Wilson helming each season, it makes it difficult to get everyone back due to scheduling. And Lang wouldn’t consider returning without the same crew.
“There’s a lot of talk of it coming back… if people want it, and there’s the question of whether we can make it together again,” Lang told Digital Spy. “Depending on my schedule and Nicola’s, but we’ll make a decision soon.
“It’s more on whether we can get the people back together. It’s hard because they’re all busy people. I wouldn’t want to work with another team – it’s almost unheard of to have the same director and writer, so it’s if we can can get everyone together, we will go again.”
The friendships between the four suspects were the driving force behind this series, with Lang adding: “I was interested in something different for the third season.
“For the four suspects, I was interested in exploring the different dynamic between them. In previous series, the suspects contact each other but there’s no real connection. I wanted to explore the nature of a long-standing friendship and what happens when a serious crisis occurs.”
Lang’s ITV Encore crime drama Dark Heart – starring Tom Riley and Charlotte Riley – will return to ITV later this year.
