Whoa, This ‘Game of Thrones’ Fan Theory About the Winterfell Crypts Is Surprisingly Optimistic

Spoilers are coming!

It’s not often that you hear a Game of Thrones fan theory and think, “Whoa, that would be such a nice outcome and would just lift my spirits.” From the theories that say Theon Greyjoy will definitely die while protecting Bran Stark from the Night King to the ones that say the army of the dead will march on to King’s Landing to kill Cersei Lannister, they never have a very optimistic tone. But this theory about the Winterfell crypts will actually make you feel a sense of hope, which doesn’t happen very often when watching this show.

If you didn’t watch last week’s episode yet, you may have missed the many, many references to how safe the crypts will be during the Battle of Winterfell. There were so many references to how that will be the best place for the people who aren’t fighting during the battle that viewers were like, yeah, sh*t is about to go down in those crypts, which are full of dead people, BTW. Since the Night King can raise people from the dead and make them join his army, it’s obvious this isn’t the best place to be, but alas.

Everyone in Winterfell is actually going along with this plan, but blogger and CUNY professor Steven Attewell has a theory that everything might actually turn out okay. He said, “I don’t think the Starks of ages past, so focused on the coming of winter, buried their dead with iron swords because they were stupid men.”

Do you know what that means? Basically, Attewell is saying that the dead Starks who are in the crypts will actually come back to help the living and fight against the Night King’s army. If true, this will be a Game! Changer!

While many of the Starks we know and loved, like Ned, Robb, and Catelyn, weren’t buried in the crypts, there are many other relatives who were. If they somehow have any brainpower to decide which side they’re on, these dead Starks could help them defeat the Night King. But it’s safe to say you shouldn’t put all your hope in Rickon Stark, who is in the crypts but didn’t even have the wherewithal to run in a zigzag motion in season 6.
