Who is the Star Wars Episode IX set pictures' mystery woman?

It’s going to be a long wait until Star Wars Episode IX, with an 18-month gap between Solo: A Star Wars Story and JJ Abrams’ The Last Jedi follow-up.

But the speculation might be amping up already, with the first pictures from the set of Episode IX emerging. We see Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) on what we would guess is a mission for the Resistance.

But who is the mysterious woman with them? This is what we know.

Who is the actress?

She appears to be Naomi Ackie, one of the new cast members announced for the movie in July.

The British actress starred in Lady Macbeth and the Doctor Who episode ‘Face the Raven’, and can be seen in Idris Elba’s upcoming directorial feature debut, Yardie.

Episode IX will also add Richard E Grant and Keri Russel to the Star Wars universe.

Who is she playing?

Disney is yet to announce who its new cast members will be playing, but we have some guesses about Ackie’s role.

There have been rumours of the film casting a character codenamed ‘Caro’, who was described as a “leader and problem solver, smart with a great sense of humour and a strong will”. They were said to be looking for a black actress for the role, so if the rumour turns out to be true, it could refer to Ackie’s part.

Combine that with the pictures, and this might point to her being another leader in the Resistance.

We’re also getting some Enfys Nest (Erin Kellyman) vibes off her – perhaps because of her cloak. Could Ackie’s character be related to the Solo: A Star Wars Story antagonist-turned-ally? Her story felt oddly truncated in Solo, as though she was originally planned to have a larger role that might have revealed more about her.

It would make sense that a descendant of a leader from the early days of the Rebellion might be involved in the Resistance, though we’re leery of suggesting that all women of colour in Star Wars must be related. It’s a big galaxy out there.

We might have to wait for the first trailer for some more clues about Ackie’s role in the movie.

Star Wars Episode IX will be released on December 19, 2019 in the UK and on December 20, 2019 in the US.
