There aren’t too many people who can say they work closely with Queen Elizabeth II on a daily basis but for Angela Kelly that’s just a day at the office. Kelly has a very important role working with Her Majesty behind the walls of Buckingham Palace and is known as the royal’s “gatekeeper.”
Here’s exactly who Kelly is, what she does for the queen, and if she is the only person besides family members allowed to touch the monarch.

Kelly’s official job title is Personal Advisor to Her Majesty (jewelry, insignias, and wardrobe). In addition to being the curator and designer of Queen Elizabeth’s clothing, Kelly is also her personal assistant.
She is divorced with three children and before she was hired to work for HM, she was a housekeeper for the British Ambassador to Germany, Sir Christopher Mallaby. The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, met Kelly in the ’90s during a royal visit to Mallaby’s home and she was offered a job at the palace when she returned to London the following year.
“I suppose the queen must have liked me and decided I was trustworthy and discreet,” Kelly said of her hiring.
She was promoted to Personal Assistant and Senior Dresser in 2002 and since then has worked alongside the monarch almost every day. The two women have developed a close friendship over that time and today Kelly remains one of the queen’s most-trusted confidants.
Is she the only person who can touch Her Majesty?

Even though Kelly is a commoner with no royal roots she is a member of Her Majesty’s inner circle and one of the only people besides family who is allowed to actually touch the queen.
“I love the queen and everything about her,” Kelly told The Telegraph. “She has allowed me to become closer to her over the years … We are two typical women. We discuss clothes, makeup, jewelry. We say, ‘Would this piece of jewelry look nice with that outfit?’”

Kelly is responsible for designing some of Queen Elizabeth’s most iconic outfits. She created a few of the looks Her Majesty wore in 2012 for her Diamond Jubilee celebration as well as the canary yellow ensemble she wore for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding back in 2011.
Kelly also has her own fashion label called Kelly & Pordum, which she started with dressmaker Alison Pordum.
“I design the clothes and Alison Pordum and our team make them,” Kelly explained. “It all started because we designed one or two things for the Queen which she liked and one thing led to another.”
