Jon Snow’s real parents were first revealed in the final episode of season seven when Bran Stark used his greensight ability to see into the past.
He watched events unfold as Ned discovers his sister Lyanna after she has given birth to Jon, and she confirms to him that Rhaegar Targaryen is the father.
Bran then tells Samwell Tarly that Lyanna and Rhaegar had married each other in secret, which legitimised Jon Snow, making him the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
The revelation also means that he is the nephew of Daenerys Targaryen.
Bran Stark discovered Jon Snow’s real name during season 7 when he looked back in time and saw Lyanna Stark reveal the baby to her brother Ned.
After revealing the father, she asked Ned to protect the baby and told him that his name is Aegon Targaryen.
