When will Holby City be back on BBC One?

BBC bosses are yet to confirm exactly when Holby City will be returning to our screens.

But the show's official Twitter account confirmed that last night’s episode of the soap would be the last one for ‘a while’.

The tweet read: "We'll be off air for a while after tonight's episode. We're already filming again and will be back later in the year!"

Production of the soap was suspended back in March due to the coronavirus.

And given that filming only resumed last month, Holby City fans should expect the drama to be back on screens later in the autumn.

When did the cast of Holby City resume filming?

Holby City recommenced filming on July 27, more than four months after lockdown forced a pause in production.

With production back up and running, the team have been filming a special comeback episode which will show the hospital gripped by the coronavirus pandemic.

The special will follow the efforts of Holby City’s CEO Max as she tries to guarantee the safety of the staff, while ensuring that the patients are getting the treatment they need.

Kate Oates, BBC Studios’ Head of Continuing Drama previously said of the return to filming: “It’s with great pleasure that we open the doors at Elstree to welcome back the exceptional cast and crew of Holby City.

"We have some gripping stories to tell as we explore how the lives of our characters have been irrevocably changed since the start of the pandemic – and how our heroes battle against the odds, come what may.”

While production has resumed, fans weren't happy as it was revealed that the new episodes will be shorter in length.

Holby City episodes are normally an hour long, but now they will be slashed to 40 minutes each when the drama returns to our screens.

What happened in Holby City's finale?

Last night’s episode left viewers hanging as it ended on some huge cliffhangers.

Fans were left sobbing as Essie tragically passed away on her wedding day.

The character, who had been battling cancer on the soap for months, passed away en route to the ceremony where she was planning to tie the knot with her partner Sacha.

Fletch broke down when he realised Essie had died, before running to the wedding to tell poor Sacha the news.

Will Sacha head on a downward spiral in the wake of Essie's death when the soap finally returns?

Elsewhere, Guy’s brief return to the soap came to a terrifying climax as he attempted surgery while under the influence of alcohol.
