Gardening Australia Spring Special

ABC, 7.30pm

On the eve of spring, the enthusiastic and motivating experts on this 28-year-old ABC stalwart are positively bursting with ideas and advice. Tino has instructions for preparing a compact vegie patch and selecting suitable crops. Josh investigates native groundcovers as an alternative to lawn. Jane visits Victoria's Governor, Linda Dessau, and admires her newly planted kitchen garden. She also learns about an initiative that invites groups of migrant women to meet at Government House, where they get tips on gardening and cooking. Sophie proudly displays some strange fruits and Millie applies creative recycling to plant holders. There's also a passionate appreciation of peonies and Jerry's novel ideas for the use of pantyhose. A hardy perennial, Gardening Australia expanded this year to hour-long episodes and has been promoted to a showcase Friday slot. As it welcomes spring, it inspires a viewer to get off the couch, grab some gardening gloves and start planting seeds and propagating aspidistras. DE
