Who was Emily Bishop on Coronation Street?

Emily Bishop was a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street.

The character is the longest-standing female character in the serial, having first appeared on-screen on December 21, 1960.

During her time on the show she was involved in plenty of dramatic storylines including her husband being shot, suffering a mental breakdown and being the victim of a murder attempt.

It was announced in November 2015 that the character would be leaving, and Emily departed on New Year's Day 2016 after 55 years on the show.

However, she made a brief cameo on October 9, 2019 for Ken Barlow's (William Roache) 80th birthday celebration.

What happened to Emily Bishop?

Emily left Coronation Street on January 1, 2016.

She went to Peru to join her nephew Spider who was teaching a school there.

Ken revealed in January 2018 that Emily had returned to the UK to care for her niece Freda in Scotland who was unwell.

She was then last seen on screen in October 2019 when she video called Ken Barlow for his birthday.

Who was Emily Bishop married to?

Emily was first set to marry Leonard Swindley in 1961, but this didn't go through.

She realised she didn’t love him and left him.

Emily had many other relationships during her time in Weatherfield, but it wasn’t until she was in her 40s that she finally met the man she would wed.

She met Ernest Bishop, who was a photographer and lay preacher, in 1970.

The pair tied the knot in 1972, however, their relationship was cut short in January 1978.

Ernest was making up wage packets in the factory on January 9 and two men entered with a shotgun, demanding money.

He gave it to them, but Mike Baldwin entered and knocked one of the gunmen, causing the weapon to go off and shoot Ernie in the chest.

Ernest died on the operating table.

Emily then went on to meet Arnold Swain in 1980, who ended up proposing but htis also didn't go to plan.

He was later proved as a bigamist and Emily ended their marriage.

Emily was played by actress Eileen Derbyshire.

However, Emily's first appearance was played by an uncredited actress.

But from January 1961 onwards, she was played by Eileen Derbyshire.
