What Brings João Franco to Tears on the Season 4 Finale of 'Below Deck Med?'

I’m not crying, you’re crying. It’s all tears of wistful sadness and melancholy during the season finale of Below Deck Mediterranean. The crew that seemed to bond better than any crew in the history of the show is saying goodbye. And bosun João Franco can’t hold back the tears.

In a clip, he lets the waterworks go, especially when he shares a tender moment with Captain Sandy Yawn. Yawn too gets choked up when she has to say farewell to the bosun. She’s been a huge supporter of Franco, encouraging him to pursue his dream of becoming a yacht captain.

So what gets Franco to become emotional during the finale? And how does he leave things when he says goodbye to chief stew, Hannah Ferrier?

Parting is such sweet sorrow

The last show of the season is always filled with sadness, but oftentimes the crew departs with a number of unresolved issues. Some crew members say “good riddance” to fellow crewmates, whereas others are overwhelmed with sadness that the ride has to end. A few couples have walked off the boat in pursuit of an onshore romance.

New best buds, deckhands Jack Stirrup and Travis Michalzik had to move bunks when chef Ben Robinson arrived at Sirocco. Michalzik was pretty upset about having to give up his rooming situation as he and Stirrup became extremely close.

On their final night, they decided to rekindle their bromance and have one last sleepover. The guys decide to camp out on the sundeck and “sleep under the stars.” Michalzik remarks that he and Stirrup had wanted to have their campout for some time, plus he was pleased that Stirrup wanted to be with him instead of new girlfriend Aesha Scott. They joke about how they’ll be up at 6 a.m. thanks to the sunrise.

Franco is ready for the next challenge

As Franco makes his way to say goodbye to Yawn, he shares a sweet moment with Ferrier. They hug and Franco remarks that the two have come so far. “Hannah and I have come a really long way,” he says in a confessional. “We respect each other’s opinion and can work with each other.”

But once he says farewell to Yawn, the two become overwhelmed. “You know how I feel,” she says as the two embrace. Franco says he’s learned so much from Yawn too. “For me, as a captain to see someone like you …” Yawn can’t continue. “Oh, my God I’m going to cry,” she whispers.

Now Franco is in tears. “You got it for me. Thank you so much,” he says as the two hug again. “It means so much to me. I love you too.” She adds that Franco has a very bright future. “I came into yachting thinking I want to be a captain,” Franco says in a confessional. “But I wouldn’t be here in my career if it weren’t for Captain Sandy. I can finally say it. And mean it. I’m a captain now.” As he walks away he says, “Cheers Sirocco, I’m out.”
