Weather Channel defends reporter after 'exaggerated' hurricane report clip goes viral

We’ve all done it, told a white lie and got caught out — but have you fibbed on live television before?

That’s what some are accusing Weather Channel reporter Mike Seidel of, after a segment during Hurricane Florence’s landfall in North Carolina this week.

Seemingly braced against extreme winds and fighting for his life, the reporter could be seen battling the conditions just as two blokes wandered behind him without a care in the world.

Obviously, the clip went viral and Seidel was made to look a bit silly.

However, his employers have now come out in defence of the journalist and delivered a statement to the Washington Post.

“It’s important to note that the two individuals in the background are walking on concrete,” they said.

“Mike Seidel is trying to maintain his footing on wet grass, after reporting on-air until 1:00 a.m. ET this morning and is undoubtedly exhausted.”

Fair enough, sometimes the Internet can be a bit quick to jump on reporters, after all.

What’s not in doubt, though, is the enormous structural and emotional damage the hurricane has caused to mainland America.

According to Associated Press, the death toll rose to 11 on Saturday (15 September) with thousands forced to flee their homes for safety.

90 miles per hour winds and torrential rain have caused rivers to rise to record levels in North Carolina, while flooding is predicted to continue over the next few days.
