Watch Stephen Colbert Give Canada New Ad Celebrating Legal Weed

Stephen Colbert offered Canada’s tourism board a hilarious new ad to run now that the country has legalized marijuana on The Late Show Wednesday. The clip begins with a narrator extolling the many wonders of Canada, from its wildlife to its cities, until his pitch takes a sudden, galactic-brain turn. “So visit today, because who knows if we’ll be here tomorrow,” he says. “You know, like, life’s so fleeting, like maple syrup oozing through an hour glass. It’s all some sort of cosmic plan that we can’t comprehend.”

The narrator descends into a stoned existential crisis – complete with the haunting visage of a moose – that not even Canada’s greatest export, the Barenaked Ladies, can lead him out of. Finally, the thought of a plate of poutine sort of snaps the narrator back to life, though he quips, “Wait, what was this an ad for again? Oh yeah, come to Canada… for some reason.”

Canada’s two legislative chambers approved the legalization of cannabis back in June and the law officially went into effect yesterday, October 17th. The country is just the second, after Uruguay, to federally legalize and regulate marijuana for adult use. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made legalization a part of his campaign platform in 2015, and after the law passed this summer, he said, “It’s been too easy for our kids to get marijuana – and for criminals to reap the profits. Today, we change that.”
