“This is just something I’ve gotta do,” he says, explaining his decision to leave the show after seven seasons.
Nev Schulman has to start fishing for a new co-host, because "Catfish" star Max Joseph just exited the show.
Though Max announced his departure from the MTV series earlier this month, his final episode aired on Wednesday night, where he made an emotional goodbye speech to the show’s fans at the end of the hour.
"Hey guys, the time has come for me to finally move on from ‘Catfish,’" he said inside the show’s headquarters, alongside Nev. "Working on the show for the last seven years has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I’ve learned a lot about myself, my country and human nature in general."
"Nev and I have become brothers and our bromance has blossomed before your eyes. Along the way, I’ve made some incredible new friends," he continued, before thanking those who appeared and worked on the show. "This is just something I’ve gotta do. It’s no secret that I have passions straddling two careers, as a TV host and a filmmaker. I feel like it’s finally time for me to make my exit."
"If I’ve learned one thing over the course of making this show it’s that we all have inclinations — especially online — to ignore people’s humanity and flatten them into our minds as a monster, a liar, a profile pic with no feelings or other qualities," Joseph went on. "But when I’ve met them and heard their story, I’ve realized they were just a human being, real and complicated. They’re just people, people who’ve been hurt, people who want to be loved."
Adding that he’s leaving with a "heavy heart" after seven seasons, Joseph also said he’s "excited" for what’s to come for him, Nev and the show. "Thank you for watching, thank you for the love," he added.
It’s not a full goodbye from Jospeh, just a goodbye for now, as he promised to pop in to "check that Nev is not too lonely without me."
Schulman made sure to let viewers know the series will continue without Max and he’s already on the hunt for a new co-host. Nev previously told TMZ he’s interested in getting a female perspective on the show, saying his dream co-star would be Cardi B.
