Watch Hugh Jackman Talk ‘Creative Genius’ Stan Lee on ‘Colbert’

Hugh Jackman remembered standing in the shadow of Stan Lee at Comic-Con during an interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show Monday. Lee, the mastermind behind the Marvel universe, died yesterday at the age of 95.

Since 2000, Jackman has portrayed Wolverine in the film adaptations of one of Lee’s most beloved comics, X-Men. While the role helped turn Jackman into a Hollywood superstar, the actor recalled the moment he realized who the true Marvel icon actually was.

“If you ever want to get a real understanding of where you’re at in the world, and you think, ‘I’m Wolverine, I’m walking into Comic-Con, this my spot, this is a good day for me,’” Jackman said. “And I was on a red carpet and I was the only one on there, and no one was taking my photo because at the other end was Stan Lee. There was about 300 photographers and interviewers all on Stan.”

Jackman also shared his condolences with Lee’s family, as well as his legions of fans. “I remember Stan as a true gentlemen, who had this glint in his eye,” Jackman said. “He’s a creative genius, he thought outside the box, he created a whole universe that changed the lives of many people, mine included.”
