Virgin River has been released on Netflix as viewers catch-up with the drama following the revelation of Charmaine Robert’s (played by Lauren Hammersley) pregnancy. In the first episode, it is revealed she has hyperemesis and needs to be looked after closely by Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Doc Mullins (Tim Matheson). However, some viewers have been wondering what exactly this is and what it might mean for her.
What is hyperemesis?
In the first episode of Virgin River season two, fans see Charmaine struggling to keep any food or water down.
Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) has gone to her house to check on her but is concerned she is struggling with the pregnancy.
He takes her to see Doc and Mel for a very awkward appointment given Mel’s recent disappearance from Virgin River.
However, concern for the patient takes over and the team are worried about Charmaine’s symptoms.
After her examination, they suspect she has hyperemesis, which would explain her symptoms.
Mel has dealt with this in several pregnant women before so it’s decided she will care for her primarily.
As a result of this, Charmaine also moves nearby the doctors into Hope’s (Annette O’Toole) spare bedroom.
The diagnosis of Jack’s ex-girlfriend left many wanting to know more about what hyperemesis is.
Hyperemesis gravidarum is also known as HG and is a condition known for very bad nausea and vomiting in pregnant women.
According to the NHS: “Some pregnant women experience very bad nausea and vomiting.
“They might be sick many times a day and be unable to keep food or drink down, which can impact their daily life.”
HG often needs hospital treatment to make sure both mother and baby are okay.

Some other symptoms of the conditions include being dehydrated, weight loss and low blood pressure.
As viewers will remember, Charmaine had all of these symptoms, which is why Mel and Doc were so concerned.
Sometimes HG, unlike morning sickness, may not clear up until the baby is born.
However, while it can make mothers-to-be feel very unwell, it is not likely to harm the baby if treated well.
As well as this, it is not known how many people get HG as some cases can go unreported.
Although, the NHS says it is thought to be around one to three in every 100.
The condition can be treated with some medicine which can help to manage the symptoms.
To find out more about this, people are advised to seek medical attention.
However, it is not yet clear how this will impact Charmaine in the series.
Viewers will have to just keep tuning in to find out more.
