Vigil star Suranne Jones’s weird fear revealed – and how she got it from CHURCH

VIGIL actress Suranne Jones has a phobia of wrists that dates back to her childhood.

But it's not just any old wrist that gives her the jitters – it's specifically her own.

Suranne, 42, has spoken of her carpophobia before and said she thinks it stems from childhood visits to church and seeing imagery of Jesus on the cross.

She told the Mirror: “I hate wrists. Growing up as a Catholic girl, seeing Jesus on the cross with the stigmata has made me not like wrists. You can see people’s veins.”

While in a chat with RadioTimes, she said: "It's not other people's wrists I'm scared of, it's mine, because the skin is thinner around that area."

Suranne, real name Sarah Anne Jones, was raised by her engineer father and a secretary mother in Manchester.

Speaking about her early life, she said: "Friday nights, me and my brother got a Fry’s Peppermint Cream, picked a video from the video shop. My brother was older, very bright.

"He went to university. I wasn’t academically bright – maybe at first, when I was little, but it was lost. I started doing a drama workshop and got really into it, then I did a BTec in performing arts and started to work.

"I left home at 16, toured [with regional musicals], did some theatre education in schools. I would get home for little moments, to drop in, get my clothes washed, then go again.".

She changed her name after discovering Sarah Anne was already registered on the actors' union.

At her father’s suggestion, the former Corrie actress took up her great-grandmother’s name, Suranne.

Soon after, she landed the role of Karen McDonald on Coronation Street at the age of 22 and her rise to stardom began.
