Victoria Beckham praised for incredible Spice Girls-inspired speech as she bags the Fashion Icon gong at star-studded People’s Choice Awards 2018

The fashion designer was praised for her speech – which referenced Spice Girls lyrics – as she took to the stage at the glamorous event held in Santa Monica, California.

Earlier in the evening she broke her silence for the first time since the Spice Girls reunion to admit she was more focused on "empowering women" through her fashion label, than Spice Girls' "girl power".

And she continued to distance herself in her widely-lauded speech after accepting the special award.

The mum-of-four said: "Ten years ago I embarked on the most exciting, nerve-wracking and all-consuming vision and to have that recognised here tonight is just incredible.

"I always told myself: dream big and then dream even bigger. I wanted to show if I can do it then really anyone can do it. What you can achieve can really be limitless."

David Beckham's wife then referenced her time as a Spice Girl, adding: "I can’t help it — if you really, really want it, okay?”

“They told me at the table, they said, ‘You come all the way from London, you gotta get up there and give ’em what they want, what they really, really want.’"

Victoria made sure to thank her ex-footballer husband and their children Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.

Those watching at home took to Twitter to praise the star for her inspiring words.

One wrote: "Loved @victoriabeckham acceptance speech!!"

Another commented: "Wow I never been interested in Victoria Beckham but I loved her speech and I definitely have respect for her now!"

A third shared: "Victoria Beckham is “really really” savage. Loved her acceptance speech."

Meanwhile, a fourth added: "I am so proud of @victoriabeckham. That speech was so inspiring and motivating. Thank you, Victoria. Girl Power."

Nicki Minaj, Rita Ora and John Legend performed during the evening.

The latter singer's wife Chrissy Teigen also took to the stage to award the Kardashians with the award for best reality show and Khloe Kardashian with the award for best reality TV star.

Many celebrities were snapped backstage at the event, including Gwen Stefani, Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian.

The latter two reality stars were mocked on social media after they were caught looking "bored" as they sat in the audience.

Before the event kicked off, a number of stars showed off their stylish outfits on the red carpet.

Mila Kunis, Christina Hendricks and Courtney Act were among those posing up a storm.

Taylor Swift – who is currently on tour in Japan – won the Concert Tour award.

She thanked fans for voting for her in a pre-recorded video.

Earlier in the night, Victoria shared a video of herself getting ready for the evening.

She wrote on her Instagram Story: "It's serious stuff this hair makeup!"

Actress and comedian Melissa McCarthy received the inaugural People's Icon of 2018 award, while Victoria Beckham picked up the Fashion Icon of 2018 gong.

The third special award, was for Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, who was handed the People's Champion of 2018 award by John Legend.

Anne Hathaway, Bryce Dallas Howard, Lily James, and Sandra Bullock were all nominated for Female Movie Star of 2018 award – but the gong went to Scarlett Johansson .

Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, Nick Robinson, and Robert Downey Jr were all up for the Male Movie Star of 2018 award – with Chadwick Boseman ultimately victorious.

Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Cardi B and Taylor Swift were all nominees for the Female Artist of 2018 award – however, it came as little surprise that Nicki Minaj, came out top.
