Vanity Fair’s Olivia Cooke says her character Becky Sharp would love Instagram

Social media brings out the narcissism in all of us, but Vanity Fair‘s Becky Sharp would be worse than most. That’s what star Olivia Cooke thinks, anyway.

In a new interview with The Telegraph, Cook was asked what her aristocratic character would make of the modern world.

“She would be so self-promoting and she would love social media,” said Cooke, who plays author William Makepeace Thackeray’s character in a new seven-part ITV adaptation.

“When I used to have an Instagram account, I followed a very famous actress who I would look up from time to time. Once she took a selfie in bed, her hair perfectly coiffed on the pillow, her latest script beside her, with a message like: ‘Work starts when you’re in bed with a script’ and you’re like ‘Oh for f***’s sake’.

“It was so narcissistic. But Becky would be like that. She would be using Instagram to promote teas and stuff. She would be so smart about it.”

ITV’s new TV adaptation was announced in June 2017 — and stars Cooke (Bates Motel and Ready Player One) in the lead role.

The adaptation of Thackeray’s classic 1848 novel is written by Gwyneth Hughes, who wrote two-part serial-killer thriller Dark Angel.

It centers on Becky Sharp, a heroine of dubious parentage who attempts to scale the heights of English society during the Napoleonic Wars, eventually earning an audience with King George IV.

Its supporting cast also includes indie music maker Johnny Flynn, Simon Russell Beale, Martin Clunes and Frances De La Tour.

Vanity Fair airs on ITV in September.
