The filmmaker, who won an Emmy for directing the outstanding episode, also seems to throw more shade at Pizzolatto.
"True Detective" Season 1 remains one of HBO’s finest productions, and the director who helmed every episode of it revealed in a new interview that creator Nic Pizzolatto tried to kill a fan-favorite moment.
Cary Fukunaga told GQ that the epic six-minute tracking shot following Matthew McConaughey’s character through a police drug raid was nearly cut up in editing.
"Nic wanted to cut it up in post-production," Fukunaga said. "He did not like that I was pushing for that one at all."
Fukunaga ended up winning his first Emmy for directing that episode.
The critically acclaimed filmmaker is currently promoting his new Netflix series, "Maniac," which stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone as two strangers drawn to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial that does not go as planned. Fukunaga reportedly clashed with Pizzolatto while directing "True Detective," and speculation of their beef only increased when the latter included an arrogant film director — with a strong resemblence to Fukunaga –as a character in the critically panned second season of the series.
Fukunaga may have just subtly shaded Pizzolatto during his chat with GQ.
"I mean, there’s nothing really that inventive about [‘True Detective’]," Fukunaga said. "It’s just another crime drama."
His mindset for that tracking shot, which was one of the most talked-about moments from Season 1, was simply, "Let’s do something fun."

Although Season 2 of "True Detective" was widely regarded as a failure, despite the star-studded cast (Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch), interest in the forthcoming Season 3 was immediately invigorated with the casting of Oscar winner Mahershala Ali.
The first trailer for the new batch of episodes debuted after the series finale of "Sharp Objects" Sunday, and fans were immediately back on board for more of the moody cop drama.
