Trans woman claiming compensation for being called ‘sir’ sparks furious debate

A trangender woman sparked a furious debate online after revealing she is claiming compensation for being called "sir".

Katie Yeomans appeared on This Morning today after demanding an apology and £2,500 in compensation after claiming that she had been called "sir" by Southern Rail staff.

The 66-year-old spoke to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on the sofa today about her experience.

Revealing that she had been called "sir" on two separate occasions, she said the first was when she was travelling back from a holiday in Gran Canaria.

"I had a dress on," she said. "He said 'just sit down there sir and I'll be with you in a minute'."

However she didn't say anything as the train was packed and didn't want to make a scene, but said it left her "fuming".

She revealed that two weeks later she was called "sir" again when asking a staff member what platform the Brighton train was on.

This time she confronted the man: "I said, 'Can you explain why you called me sir?'. At first he said that he couldn't see me [but he later] said 'I didn't see you because my glasses were steamed up'."

She insisted that the member of staff had known because he had seen her name on her ID.

However Phil asked whether it had been "done maliciously".

"It's hard to say," Katie replied. "The first time, maybe… the second time was definitely not a mistake."

She revealed that after writing to the train company, she heard that the first guard denied any contact with her and the second insisted that he had called her "ma'am".

This sparked a furious debate online, with some agreeing with Katie and others saying that her suing was "ridiculous".

One tweeted: " She herself just said that when somone deliberately offends a transgender person, then it’s a crime. The person that called her ‘ Sir’, didn’t deliberately say it, so why she suing?? She’s making no sense whatsoever #ThisMorning."

While another commented: " Don’t get why people can be nasty 2 transgender people I can think of nothing braver than changing every last thing about yourself 2 be who you really are Trans people you are so so strong ❤️ #thismorning."
