So far, no hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gotten more than three films of their own films. However, the MCU will break new ground when Chris Hemsworth returns for the fourth Thor film, 2021’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
Director Taika Waititi — who reinvigorated the series with 2017 release Thor: Ragnarok — is hopping back in the director’s chair for the new film as well as reprising his role as Korg. However, it sounds like Thor: Love and Thunder will take even greater creative risks than its predecessor.
Taking the God of Thunder further
The announcement of Thor: Love and Thunder was one of the standout moments at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Waititi discussed plans to build on his own distinctive take on the series.
“Well, if you take Ragnarok, which I feel was a very outlandish and big, bombastic film, we’re trying to double down on everything we did with that and create something that is even more crazy and even more of a big adventure,” he said.
Of course, Waititi didn’t offer many details, though reports indicate that the script is now complete. All we really know is who the principal players are. Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman will headline the film. Meanwhile, Waititi’s Korg is expected to play a more pivotal role.

Is Korg the key to unlocking ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’?
Although it’s difficult to speculate exactly how Thor: Love and Thunder will push the envelope, Korg’s expanded role could be a clue about what fans can expect. In the same ET interview, Waititi teased that Thor and Korg will be “a bit of a duo” this time around.
This doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll share as prominent a buddy dynamic as Thor and Hulk in Ragnarok. But a larger role for Korg likely does indicate how integral Waititi’s signature humor will be to the final product. Apparently, the glimpse we got of Thor and his Fortnite teammate in Avengers: Endgame will be a factor here.
Inspired by Marvel Comics artist Jack Kirby, Thor: Ragnarok felt like more of a cosmic romp than either of the first two Thor films, thanks in part to elements like the scene-stealing Korg. A lighter, more psychedelic feel may not be everyone’s personal preference but has worked wonders for Thor.
Reintroducing Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor
One of the biggest challenges Thor: Love and Thunder will face is the reintroduction of Portman’s Jane Foster. In the comics, Jane is battling breast cancer when she inherits the mantle of Thor. That could be a tricky storyline to cover with the wacky abandon captured in Thor: Ragnarok, considering the sensitive topic.
Then again, Waititi is clearly not afraid to tackle difficult subjects and risk courting controversy in the process. After all, his new film, Jojo Rabbit, is a self-described “anti-hate satire” that sees the director co-star as a comedic version of Adolf Hitler. So perhaps he has found a way to crack Jane’s story without stepping over the line or offending general audiences.
In any case, the return of Jane likely means the end of Hemsworth’s time in the MCU is drawing near. We’ll have a better idea of what to expect soon, but fans should prepare to bid farewell to the God of Thunder.
