Acclaimed actor Sterling K. Brown has had an incredible last few years as one of the stars of the hit drama series This Is Us on NBC. Though the show features a lot of talent, he has arguably been the standout actor amongst them. Now, he’s getting his chance to try on a very different kind of role. Here’s what we know about Brown’s upcoming appearance on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Brown began acting in 2002. He appeared in films such as Trust the Man and Our Idiot Brother. Brown also did well on TV, with recurring roles on series like Third Watch, Supernatural, and Person of Interest.
After starring on Army Wives for several seasons, 2016 was Brown’s big year. He starred in the film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, as well as the limited series The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which earned him his first Emmy. This is also the year he landed his most significant role on This Is Us.
Though he had an accomplished career prior to it, This Is Us was the show that made Brown a household name. On the series, Brown stars as Randall Pearson, the adopted brother of twins Kevin and Kate, who was taken in by their parents the day he was born. He struggles with being the outlier amongst his siblings.
Brown’s role as Randall brought him back to back Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor. He won the award with his first nomination in 2017, helping to make This Is Us the popular series that it is today.
Brown took to Instagram to announce his new project. In the video, he sips from a mug, looking out a window. He says he’s headed “eastward” in order to film The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which shoots in New York (This Is Us is filmed in Los Angeles).
Brown chuckles saying that creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, “were kind enough to write a little something” for him, adding, “I’m getting together with Midge, and it’s going to be awesome.”
For fans of Brown who want to watch him on the Amazon period dramedy, here’s what you need to know: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is currently shooting its third season. In the first two seasons, you get to know the eponymous character, a Manhattan housewife who finds herself pursuing a career in stand-up comedy.
The series, which, comes from the creators of Gilmore Girls, stars Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, and Tony Shalhoub. Like This Is Us, it has done very well at the Emmys — earning five awards at the 2018 ceremony.
Right now, there are no details about Brown’s character. The series is entirely fictional, however, it does feature nods and even appearances from comics who were well-known during the era (late 1950s-early 1960s). This means that Brown could be playing a real-life comedian.
Interestingly, Bill Cosby got his start at the Gaslight Cafe in 1961 where Midge first performed, though it seems unlikely that they would give the now-disgraced star his due on Mrs. Maisel. Maybe they’ll opt to have a Cosby-like character instead. Whatever his role, there’s no doubt that Brown will do a great job at adding a bit of diversity to the series.
