'This Is Us': Fans Have so Many Questions About Miguel—They Think They Know When They Will Finally Get Answers

NBC’s critically acclaimed series, This Is Us, is well-known for its flashbacks and flash-forwards. Every week they delve into the history of each character, sometimes several characters all in one show. At first, it was primarily Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) and his wife, Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) story of how they married and ended up with three children. The show continually explores the backstory of ‘the big three’: Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Kate (Chrissy Metz).

More recently, the flashbacks have turned to more minor characters such as ‘the big three’s Uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne) and Randall’s wife, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson). However, viewers hardly know anything about Rebecca’s second husband, Miguel (Jon Huertas), and they have so many questions. Let’s take a look at what fans think is to come for Miguel—the former best friend of the late Jack.

What do we know so far about Miguel on ‘This Is Us?’

We know a few critical facts about Miguel, and that is about it. Viewers watched as Miguel and Jack became very close friends. Miguel once saved Jack from being fired. Jack also consoled Miguel after his separation from his wife.

The Pearson family had Miguel over for Thanksgiving for his very first holiday since his divorce. In the present-day, we witnessed Rebecca and Miguel at an awkward family Thanksgiving with Miguel’s now grown-up children.

We also know that Rebecca and Miguel reconnected via Facebook. However, we have no idea how he came to marry Rebecca. At family functions, the Pearsons do not go out of their way to make Miguel feel welcome. He practically had to beg to wear the famous Pilgrim Rick hat during Thanksgiving.

“What am I, chopped liver?” Miguel asked in the season 4 Thanksgiving episode of This Is Us. That one quote sums up how the Pearsons generally interact with Miguel.

What do fans want to know about Miguel on ‘This Is Us?’

Fans show more love to Miguel than the Pearson family regularly does. The viewers want to know his backstory and how he came to marry Rebecca, to name a few of the many questions.

“I honestly wish they would make an episode about Miguel,” one fan on Reddit wrote. “Miguel is a dark horse here, and his story has the potential to spruce up the show. What was his divorce with Shelly like? Where are the kids? How did Shelly react when she found out Miguel married their good friend? What was their older, more seasoned romance like?”

“How did it compare to their previous marriages?” the Redditor continued. “What was their wedding like? How long did they date?”

Fans are dying to know more about Miguel. They feel that the writers have not given him proper character development; however, some fans believe there is a reason for his missing story.

What do fans theorize the writers are going to do about Miguel’s backstory or any flash-forwards?

“I think the rumors of season 5 being Miguel heavy are true,” wrote another viewer on Reddit. “My theory is that as season 5 and the rest of 4 go in deeper with Rebecca’s ailment, Miguel will play a heavy role. He’s her husband and was her best friend after Jack died. They come together best when Rebecca needs him.”

Another fan agreed that the writers would give viewers more information about Miguel in the coming episodes.

“I remember reading something about how Miguel’s storyline is more connected to the big picture of the show,” added another fan. “Since the show emphasizes the impact and importance of memories, I have a feeling Miguel’s character is about to become really important since he and Nicky are the only people besides Rebecca that really knew Jack (the kids aside).”

Many fans feel that the much-anticipated backstory of Miguel is coming soon. To find out, you can catch new episodes of This Is Us when the show returns from winter break on Jan. 14, 2020.
