The EGOT winner also explained why she thinks the Academy is having a tough time finding a host.
Whoopi Goldberg already volunteered herself to host the Oscars, but she has another idea, too.
On "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" Tuesday night, Goldberg recommended "brilliant" actor and comedian Ken Jeong for the job. The CBS late-night host asked for her "expertise" during this "national crisis" in wake of Kevin Hart stepping down from the hosting gig following an uproar over his years-old homophobic tweets.
"I want Ken [Jeong] to do it," Goldberg said. "He would be brilliant and it would also constitute the first Asian American to host the Oscars. It would be a whole series of firsts."
"And he also loves film and I think that’s what you need in a host," she continued. "You need somebody who actually gets why films are great and can tell you the ins and outs and the silliness of movies."
Jeong rose to fame in "The Hangover" franchise and became the star of his own sitcom, "Dr. Ken," which ran until 2017. Most recently he appeared in blockbuster romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" and the "Goosebumps" sequel.
Colbert asked "The View" co-host why it seems no one wants the job. Goldberg said it’s not necessarily that people aren’t interested in hosting, but pinned social media as the culprit.
The EGOT winner said times have changed, and now everyone can offer their opinion about how they think a MC did.
"Nobody wants to hear that," Goldberg said. "It should be a lot easier to do than it is."
Earlier on "The View" Tuesday, the ladies weighed in on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reportedly considering having no host at all. Goldberg made it clear that she was not a fan of this idea.
"Here’s the deal, if you wanna go hostless, that’s your prerogative," Goldberg said. "I think it’s a dumb idea because people need you to take them through things and take care of things when they happen."
When the other women on the ABC daytime talk show asked who they think should host this year’s event, Goldberg suggested herself.
"I realize I may not be anybody’s first choice," she admitted, and acknowledged that she’s "also problematic" to a lot of viewers. "Half of the country is sometimes really mad at me, the other half is okay, until tomorrow and they’re pissed."
