The X Factor's Misunderstood have admitted they're gutted to leave and say the show is not the same without Robbie Williams who apologised to them on Skype last night

Fans were devastated when the duo, who were tipped for the finals, were axed from the show while their mentor was away in Argentina on tour.

Misunderstood have opened up about how Robbie, 44, left a gaping hole in the line-up when he left to go on tour.

The duo, Stephan Benson and Jeffrey Okyere, said they missed their mentor's presence.

In an exclusive chat with The Sun Online, Stephan explained: "It was a difference. Robbie Williams in itself as an entity, he is such a big character.

"So of course  if you go somewhere and that person is not there anymore the energy is going to be different."

Jeff added: "But Nile [Rodgers, who stepped into replace Robbie] came ready, and was such a pleasure to work with."

Stephan said: "Obviously we were bummed out about it because were working so hard and the fans were incredible.

"But it teaches you never to be complacent.

"Robbie was really shocked. Robbie was the best mentor, as well as Nile Rodgers."

Addressing fix rumours, Jeff, said: "I have no words. It was a massive shock for us –  but the show must go on.

"We understand everyone's concerns."

Jeff added: "He was the best mentor we could have asked for. We spoke to him on Skype last night and he was shocked."

When asked if Robbie apologised for not being there, Stephan said: "He did.

"But he also knows that we understand that this is the music industry, this is what happens, he has to go on tour.

"Him not being here wasn't the reason we went home.

"We are very much involved in everything we do, and he is an extension of what we do, but having Nile, we were in safe hands."

"We spoke over Skype about the performance and when we are going to meet up and move forward."

Although they were "gutted" to to be out by public vote, they promised fans it's is not over for them as they already have a gig booked at GAY in London on Saturday night.

They gave fans an insight of what it was like to work with Robbie and the banter they had.

Jeff said: "He is literally a living legend –  It's like 'Let me Entertain you all the time'? Literally."

Stephan added: "When we were in the house we'd be chilling out on the PS4 with Robbie playing Fifa and he'd all of a sudden he would just start singing all of our songs.

"Going through Juicy Fruit, to Girls in London, to Chewing Gum, then all of the choir in the house would start was singing it, and all of the people in the house were singing."
