The Walking Dead’s Pollyanna McIntosh reflects on those Alpha fan theories

The Walking Dead star Pollyanna McIntosh has reflected on those Alpha fan theories that linked Jadis to being the iconic comics villain.

Fans speculated during season eight that the Scavengers leader would actually turn out to be the Whisperers leader, especially after the slaughter of her group, but Pollyanna McIntosh played down the links and now Samantha Morton has been cast in the critical role.

“It’s thrilling. I couldn’t be happier. She’s such a great actor, I’ve been a fan of her for ages. What an amazing choice, so, so cool,” she told Digital Spy about Morton’s casting.

“I always said I’d love to play Alpha, but I’d also love to see another great leader on the show who’s female, and if we had combined the two, we’d have lost that opportunity. I’m thrilled to bits that Samantha Morton is doing it and I can’t wait to see how she plays it. It’s going to be awesome.”

It’s all change for Jadis in season nine, as we saw at the end of season eight that she was going to join the Alexandrians and is actually called Anne.

“She’s a little bit wary after everything that’s happened, but she seems pretty pleased to get in there and find a new community having lost everybody. It was a really nice way to start the season,” McIntosh explained.

Following the 18-month time jump, we’ll meet Anne again when she’s still “somewhere in between” feeling like a member of the group and an outsider trying to prove herself.

“Considering where she’s come from and the position she’s used to being in, and the fact that she really went to war with them, she and her people killed a lot of Alexandrians, [it’s] probably difficult [for] everybody – and not just her – for it to be a full integration. But she’s definitely doing her damnedest,” McIntosh teased.

“I think Anne has a deep respect for Rick and even though she’s gone back on some deals she made with him, I’ve always felt that in the character, that she had a respect for him. So I think she’s going to be trying to be the best part of that community she can be.”

McIntosh has also urged fans not to quit the show once Andrew Lincoln leaves as Rick, promising that “they’re going to have a lot coming to them”.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC in the US on October 7 and on FOX and NOW TV in the UK on October 8.
